  • 3 min reading time

If you're a fan of Middle Eastern cuisine, you've probably tasted tahini before. This rich, creamy paste made from ground sesame seeds is a staple ingredient in many dishes, from hummus to falafel to salad dressings. But did you know that you can easily make your own tahini at home, with just a few simple ingredients and a food processor or blender? In this recipe, we'll show you how to make creamy homemade tahini in just minutes, so you can enjoy the delicious and nutritious flavour of this versatile ingredient in your favourite recipes. Let's get started!

Ingredients:

Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 175°C.
  • Spread the sesame seeds in a single layer on a baking sheet and roast them in the oven for 10-15 minutes, until they are lightly golden and fragrant.
  • Let the sesame seeds cool for a few minutes, then transfer them to a food processor or high-speed blender.
  • Add the olive oil (if using) and salt to the food processor or blender.
  • Blend the mixture until it becomes a smooth paste, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. This may take several minutes, depending on the power of your food processor or blender.
  • If the tahini seems too thick, you can add a little bit more olive oil or water and blend again until it reaches your desired consistency.
  • Once the tahini is smooth and creamy, transfer it to an airtight container and store it in the fridge for up to a month.

Sesame seeds have a rich history and have been used as a food ingredient for thousands of years. They are believed to have originated in India or Africa, and were first cultivated in ancient Babylon and Assyria. Sesame seeds were highly valued by ancient civilisations, who used them for their oil and as a source of food. Today, sesame seeds are used in a variety of cuisines around the world. They have a mild, nutty flavour and a slightly crunchy texture, which makes them a popular ingredient in many dishes, from breads and pastries to sauces and dressings. In Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines, sesame seeds are often ground into a paste called tahini, which is used as a dip or spread. In addition to their delicious flavour, sesame seeds are also highly nutritious. They are a good source of protein, fibre, and healthy fats, as well as several vitamins and minerals, including calcium, iron, and magnesium. Sesame seeds are also rich in antioxidants, which help to protect against oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. Sesame seeds have been used in traditional medicine for their health benefits for centuries. They are believed to have anti-inflammatory properties, and may help to reduce the risk of heart disease, lower cholesterol levels, and support bone health. Some studies have also suggested that sesame seeds may have anticancer effects, although more research is needed to confirm these findings. Overall, sesame seeds are a delicious and nutritious ingredient that can be incorporated into a wide range of recipes. Whether you enjoy them as a snack, a topping for salads or stir-fries, or as an ingredient in your favourite dishes, sesame seeds are a versatile and healthy addition to any diet.
